Why Bother?

Why bother with modesty? Many women will ask the question, “What’s the big deal? I should be able to wear whatever I want, it’s my body, right?!” Wrong. This viewpoint, while common in this modern society, proves to be dangerous, especially in the life of a Christian woman.

There are 3 simple aspects that we all need to understand regarding modesty:

1. Our bodies belong to God. 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20 (KJV) says, “What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” In this passage, we can clearly see that “our” bodies do not, in fact, belong to us. Because of Christ’s sacrifice for us, we owe our lives to Him.

2.  Everything we do should bring God glory. 1 Corinthians 10:31 (KJV) commands, “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” The word “whatsoever” is not one used very often today, but it is the most important word in this verse. Not only do we need to pay attention to what we put IN our bodies, we also need to pay special attention to what we put ON our bodies.

3. You are not the only one who sees you.  Matthew 5:28 (KJV) explains, “But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her in his heart.” As women, it is very important to make sure that what we put on our bodies does not cause men to lust after us. The first impression that people have of us, more often than not, is based on how we are dressed. What kind of message do we want to give? Dressing in a provocative way can cause men to lust and the Bible is clear that this desire is sin. Do not be the cause of sin in men. Respect them and respect yourself.

And that, ladies, is why you should bother.
